CAMERAS AND MIRRORS

Sunday December 10, 4pm

Studio 10 Gallery, 56 Bogart

A discussion of “Passing Through,” an Exhibition of New Work by Robert Marshall, with Alan Wiener, Lilly Wei, Ernst Fischer and Robert Marshall

“Photographs are a way of imprisoning reality, understood as recalcitrant, inaccessible; of making it stand still.” – Susan Sontag

“You can still see the camera.” – Alan Wiener

In my work on reflective surfaces, I want to explore and embody the uncertain nature of perception. I want to represent ephemeral moments. I also want to make work that resists the imprisonment of which Sontag speaks. Work that won’t cooperate too easily with the endless reproduction (and reduction) of pretty much everything. I’ll be discussing this and other issues with Alan Wiener, the artist who documents (or attempts to document) these pictures that I’m claiming are “impossible to photograph.” In our improvisational and collaborative process, Alan and I end up facing countless conundrums. And maybe (it seems to me) we create new works. Since he takes the pictures, I wanted to get his “take.” I’ve also asked the artist and writer Ernst Fischer to add his perspective. The critic and curator Lilly Wei will moderate the discussion. Everyone who attends will, of course, be welcome to join in. – Robert Marshall
