Jan 6th – Feb 5th

Opening Reception: Friday, Jan 6th, 2016 7-9 PM

Studio10 is pleased to present Scenes from Paradise, Lenore Malen’s first solo exhibition with the gallery. Working with photography, video and performance, Malen creates multi-channel projections and installations that satirically explore utopian myths and the sciences and the technologies that inform them.

The planet is in jeopardy, Eden is our earth, Adam and Eve have 7 billion descendants. In Scenes from Paradise, Malen brings to life a 15th-century manuscript illumination of Eden as a multi channel video installation set in a staged environment and a performance. Copying the manuscript scene with its original characters: animal and human, she re-presents the myth of Eden as a dark comedy, reversing the roles of human and non-human animals. The story in which humans gain dominion over every living thing on earth becomes a cautionary tale made newly relevant by the ticking clock of climate change, habitat-loss, and extinction.

A publication will be available in conjunction with the exhibition with essays by Nancy Princenthal and Jeffrey Jerome Cohen.

Malen has received a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship and NYFA and NYSCA awards in Interdisciplinary Art. She exhibits in the US and internationally. She teaches in the MFA Fine Arts Program at Parsons/The New School

Malen has exhibited and performed in New York at Apex Art, Participant Inc., Location One, Art in General, Skidmore College, The Cue Art Foundation, Wave Hill, and The Slought Foundation, Tufts University, Wesleyan University, The Mediations Biennale, Poznan, Poland. In l999-2000 she collaborated with Stephan Argillet and France Fiction to produce a series of folios in the publication 9/9 revue d’art practice.
